tv   Special Report With Bret Baier  FOX News  September 9, 2011 1:00am-2:00am PDT

1:00 am
connection between iran and al qaeda, just recently. >> well... that sounds fun. >> greg: i just figured that out myself. >> really? >> greg: no. i was kidding. i was pretending like i knew useful things when i really don't. something -- it bothers me, actually. >> okay. >> greg: i don't know. >> yeah. >> it's a good story, though. >> greg: it is. you want this ice cream later? >> i would love some. >> greg: visome in my trailer. >> parked out back? >> greg: excellent. i can't hear you, really. >> sean: president obama just unveiled the jobs plan that we've been waiting and waiting and waiting for. it sounded more like a candidate stump speech than a policy proposal.
1:01 am
the anointed one and his economic team had months to hammer out the american jobs act. tonight the president proposed a massive i go away to teachers to small business owners to construction workers. all paid for with, well he's not sure, except for this. >> the president: while most people in this country struggle to make ends meet, a few of the most affluent citizens and most profitable corporations enjoy tax breaks and loopholes that nobody else gets. we need a tax code where everyone gets a fair shake. >> sean: since it seems like the words stimulus and tax hikes were thrown out before the speech, i think the new call to tax the rich given it was president obama himself who delivered the speech it included a swipe, what a shock, at his political foes. >> the president: some of you sincerely believe that the only solution to our economic challenges to simply cut most government spending and
1:02 am
eliminate most government regulations. what we can't do, what i will not do, is let this economic crisis be used as an excuse to wipe out the basic protections that americans have counted on for decades. >> sean: basic protections were always there like obamacare and cash for clunkers, urgent legislation that the president used his political capital to ram through. that does not tell you what this man's priorities are, i don't know what does. joining me now, he was in the audience house majority leader eric cantor. welcome back. >> good to be on. >> sean: i don't know what to say except a yawn, repetitive, doubling down on stupid. i'll let you use your own terms. it sounded like the stimulus proposal that he had that created no jobs that cost us millions in jobs. your thoughts? >> my question in sort of
1:03 am
reflecting on the president's performance tonight is the approach he took. it was presented as an all or nothing package. the president needs a win here. i think the people of the country need a win. they are hurting. we all know the unemployment numbers. we know that people are just plan out of money and out of hope. so, it is just striking to me that the president would sort of lay down the gauntlet and say, pass my package, all or nothing. especially after all we've been through here. now, as you indicate there was plenty in there policy-wise things that resonate with the republicans. when you start talking about tax relief for small business owners, that's something that we've been talking about for several years now. when you start talking about streamlining bureaucracy, so you can get more bang for the buck, if you will, in infrastructure spending, fine. and he mention a program in georgia, having to do with
1:04 am
unemployment benefits. that georgia works program was something we've been talking about since december 2009. so there certainly are some things i think we could get wins on together for the people. but when he says it is basically all or nothing, that is not how things can get done. that's not a serious way to accomplish policy results. >> sean: in the end too, this is just shy of 500 billion dollars that we're talking about. he kept saying we've got this paid for. then he punts on paying for it by handing it off to the super committee. we are not confident or don't know if they are going to be able to cut the money they already promised they are going to cut. so he doesn't have this paid for. he's telling congress, you guys get it paid for. >> it was i think not accurate to say it was paid for, at least in tonight's speech. how could it be paid for if then he asks congress to
1:05 am
identify cuts and savings? come on. so we're back to sort of the same old, same old when it comes to spending. i've not seen the details. some of the spending language that he used sounded a lot like the kind of language we heard in the stimulus pitch, several years ago. and we all know how successful that was. >> sean: look, here's the interesting thing to me. he seem like he's a little late to this dance, when you think about it. we just had this big debt ceiling debate he never presented a plan. not a plan that we can online tonight and read, this is my specific bill. this is what i want the person people to support. so the devil is always going to be in the details. the one thing is consistent as i predicted on this program, and on my radio show, he used class warfare, repeatedly. he wants tax increases, that means for small business in
1:06 am
the end. as david plouffe and fire were out there for the last two -- and pfeiffer, were out there for the last days, i have spies who sat in the spin room meetings, they are going to say michelle bachmann supported the payroll tax cut. so and so supported this in the past. is that going to be effective in selling this deal? >> no. the president saying something is bipartisan suggests that he knows what we would be for. again, that's not how you get a win. that's not how we are going to reduce results for the people that are out of work and hurting in this country. i really do think there's a better way. and the president, i think, missed an opportunity to put his best foot forward to say, we know republicans and democrats, conservatives and liberals are not going to agree on a lot of things. but there are some things we can do if we transcend those decisions and stick to the
1:07 am
mission. to get entrepreneurs back into the business of job creation. >> sean: i got the sense the president tonight sounded like a used car salesman trying to push clunkers out the door as fast as he could. pass the bill. pass bill. pass the bill. >> the president: i am sending this congress a plan that you should pass right away. you should pass this jobs plan right away. pass this jobs bill. [ applause [ >> the president: pass this jobs bill, right away. pass this jobs bill, right away. pass this jobs bill. pass this bill. pass this jobs bill. pass this bill. pass this jobs bill. you should pass it again, right away. pass in bill right away. you should pass it. i intend to take that message to every corner of this country. >> sean: by the way, all individual cuts. as i watched this, beyond it being bad writing, he can't say the word stimulus any
1:08 am
more. nancy pelosi has outlawed that word. so they use the words investment and building and infrastructure. is this a plan -- it is a serious side to this. is this a plan that is going to help the american people, the 14, 15 million people unemployed, the underemployed those whose homes are underwater is this going to get our economy back what he outlined tonight? >> way he outlined it is not going to effect a result if you start with small business tax relief his ideas may be different than ours. if the sense is we have to provide incentives for entrepreneurs, small businesses to tart creating jobs again that is something we can embrace too. when we were talking about the stimulus bill, several years ago, we republicans, we said we didn't support it. none of us voted for it. the reason was, we had an alternative that was squarely based on trying to deal with
1:09 am
small business people trying to get them back into investment and job creation. those are the things we believe in. not if he sits here and preaches pass the bill, pass the bill, o by the way i'm taking it to every corner of the country if you don't. >> sean: i was happy with the fact that the republicans, you guys did keep a lot of your promises. repeal health care, you voted to do that. i wish we did better on the 2011 budget. the debt ceiling thing i wanted you guys to stand firm. some of your colleagues got mad at me, because i like cut, cap and balance. the point is, you have passed the ryan plan. you passed cut, cap and balance. and then you started negotiating with the mcconnell plan and this other plan. will the republicans stand united on the principles that will get the economy running again this time? in other words, i don't want to see the republicans competing against each other. >> i agree with that sean. we ought not be competing against each other. i think we are on the side of
1:10 am
the american people. they want to see government spending brought under control. they want to see job growth again. the way we do that, we stand for entrepreneurialism and free enterprise. look, let's face it, we are in control of the house. we're blocking things that would be harmful to business growth. trying to get going on an agenda, we need help in the senate and we need help in the white house. we are going to be embarking upon the next 10 weeks of rolling back regulations that the obama administration is putting into place that is going to harm job growth. we are also to be advocating for tax relief for small businesses that helps create middle class jobs. these are the things we are going to stay united around. hopefully, the president will stop this all or nothing demand and join us in trying to do some good for the people that so desperately need it across this country. >> sean: i feel we may be headed for a lost decade. it seems the path japan chose, one stimulus, another stimulus
1:11 am
and they never recovered. congressman, good to see you. we'll be watching this closely. appreciate you be with us. >> thanks sean. >> sean: kentucky senator rand paul rates his father's performance in last night's debate. >> but first frank luntz and his focus group live in atlanta with reaction to the president's speech that is coming up, straight ahead. @@g

1:15 am
>> sean: this is a fox news alert. federal authorities are investigating a terror threat to american shores. surrounding the upcoming anniversary of the september 11th, terrorist attacks. mayor bloomberg will deliver a press conference the threat moments from now. it is said to involve car bombs in the washington, d.c. or new york city metro areas. the department of homeland security spade if a statement today that the threat is both specific and credible. -- we'll keep you posted. >> president obama finally delivered his long awaited jobs speech tonight complete with the less typical talking points, blaming president bush for the state of the economy a using the gop of preventing progress. joining me from atlanta the president of luntz global the one and only frank -- you
1:16 am
weren't quelling at this group of my friends in atlanta were you? >> no, but if the introduction gets longer, i'm going to start yell at you. i guess that didn't go down too well. i want to begin a clip. the red line represents republicans the green democrats. the higher the lines the more favorable reaction. early in the speech he talked about the role of congress and business. let's take a look. >> the president: those of us here tonight can't solve all our nation's woes. ultimately our recovery will be driven not by washington but by our businesses and our workers. but we can help. we can make a difference. are steps we can take right now, -- there are steps we can take right now to improve people's lives. >> look at that spread when he says we can help, we can make a difference. how many of you believe washington is responsible for
1:17 am
this economic situation? raise your hands. these are republicans and democrats. obama, mccain people in here. how many of you believe washington is the solution to the problem, raise your hands? four of you. what is up? what is the deal here? explain it. >> they need to get out of the way. they try to do too much. too much regulation, too much obamacare. not balancing a budget. get out of way, let free markets take hold. >> small business grows the economy, it is the engine. >> i look at it as the democratic party itself. they've changed so much. because they've turned into a political obstructionist of the democracy process. >> which is what they accused the republicans of doing before. >> if we all assume they are the problem how can we assume they are the solution? >> too many taxes, took
1:18 am
regulations they have to get out of the way it >> i say get rid of them all and start over again. [ applause ] >> that's powerful. we are splitting evenly. how many of would you vote against every incumbent regardless of political party, raise your hands? sean i want you to see this. this is significant. we got republicans and democrats saying, enough is enough. did you hear anything tonight that suggested that things are going to change? >> loopholes and stuff like that, that is something everybody said they were for now of course they are going to be against it so they can hit each other in the head and have a party. >> i like tax credits for businesses and individuals. >> anti-washington mood, we've had it in all of these dial sessions. it is getting deeper and angrier and cutting across the political spectrum. i don't think washington realizes -- how many of you
1:19 am
are mad as hell l? half these people voted, half voted for obama and they are all mad as hell. >> sean: i spent four wonderful years in atlanta from '92 to '96. i lived in atlanta. it was a democratic stay now it is a red state. the president had this big lead up to the speech when he gets back from his trip to martha's vineyard. he gives this speech, joint session of congress, is there anything new they heard from the president tonight? does this all sound the same from him? is there anything that inspired them tonight? >> in the back, go ahead guys. >> it sounds the same, same rhetoric. pass the bill, read it later. he could have replaced obamacare with this job bill. >> nothing new. >> all short term stuff. businesses want to be able to plan long term. >> that's a temporary job
1:20 am
that's not a job that is going to last 10 years. >> overall question, reelection or results? was this a speech about reelection, results? >> reelection! >> people who voted for him, please defend him. >> why? [ laughing ] >> would you defend him? >> absolutely not. >> why not? >> he's not doing a good job. >> will you defend him? >> i wouldn't defend him. it is more about jobs than anything. >> will you defend him? >> yes, i would. he needs more support. >> someone needs to speak up. >> this was a spending bill he didn't call it that. we don't need to pen more we need to free up private business to create jobs. >> again, even split between mccain and obama. other than a few of you, they are not defending him. >> sean: is there one person that voted for obama that was
1:21 am
inspired by the speech tonight? >> were you inspired by the speech tonight? >> somewhat, not really. >> in the back, were you inspired by the speech tonight? >> he talked about veterans. there's a big problem with joblessness. >> were you inspired? >> yeah because he talked about getting rid of the loopholes and everything. >> were you inspired? >> somewhat. >> that's the answer. somewhat. >> sean: if i was david plouffe and pfeiffer the guys that were spinning, i would be nervous. we are going to come back frank luntz and his group from atlanta. also tea party caucus, senator rand paul is here to react to the president's job speech. all of that plus our great more than panel, straight ahead head. service was very moving, wasn't it? yes, it was. i'm so glad we could be here for larry. at a time like this, friends and family matter most. even preparing this lunch is a help, emotionally and financially.
1:22 am
mm, it's true. i was surprised to hear there was no life insurance. funerals are so expensive. i hope larry can afford it. i know. that's why i'm glad i got a policy through the colonial penn program. it gives me peace of mind to know i can help my family with some of those expenses. you know, i've been shopping for life insurance. do you think they have coverage for me, something that would fit into my budget? yes. you can get permanent coverage for less than 35 cents a day. if you're between 50 and 85, your acceptance is guaranteed. you won't have to take a physical or answer any health questions. oh, really? with my health, i didn't think i'd qualify. you can't be turned down because of your health. plus, your costs will never go up, and your coverage will never go down. okay. i'm convinced. i'm going to give them a call. are you between the ages of 50 and 85? did you think that quality insurance at an affordable rate is out of your reach?
1:23 am
if you answered yes to these questions, then you should call about the colonial penn program now. for less than 35 cents a day, you can get affordable life insurance with guaranteed acceptance. there are no health questions or medical exam. you cannot be turned down because of your health. so, whether you're getting new insurance or supplementing coverage you already have, join the six million people who have called about the colonial penn program. ask one of their representatives about a plan that meets your needs. they're waiting to hear from you, so call now. i've put this off long enough. i'm definitely gonna call about the colonial penn program.
1:24 am
1:25 am
>> sean: welcome back to this special post presidential speech edition of hannity. we continue with pollster president of luntz global group frank luntz and his focus group. we have an equal number of republicans and democrats. those who voted for obama, those who didn't. how many of those that roted for obama plan on voting for him in 2012? >> how many of you are voting
1:26 am
for obama in 2012, raise your hands? how many are not sure? that's the problem sean. you don't have this intensity. people opposed to him have already made up their minds. those who support him are still wondering. we have a clip where he talked about the tax loopholes and the desire to make a level playing field this is one of those cases where republicans and democrats respond favorably. let's take a look. >> the president: by eliminating pages of loopholes and reductions we can lower one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world. our tax code should not give advantage to companies that can afford lobbyists. it should give to companies who invest and create jobs here in the united states of america. [ applause ] >> clearly you agree with that. that's strong. why not give him the benefit of the doubt? >> we want to believe him. he doesn't give us anything to hang our hat on.
1:27 am
>> he doesn't have a record that shows he's going to do what he says. >> how long is it going to make these important decisions? >> point is, it doesn't increase consumer confidence. >> he needs to get congress to also agree. they are for it then against it, like they say. >> they've spent a trillion dollars to get this economy going. and it has failed. why should we believe anything that is going to work in time. >> let me ask you about in belief thing. he said many times, this will be paid for. do you believe him, yes or no? >> no. >> one more time, do you believe him >> no. >> you voted for him but you don't believe it is paid for, why not? >> again he's going to run into congress. they are going to reject it. and he's going to be stuck out there looking -- >> you done blame him, you blame congress? >> yes. >> what about the first two years, unchecked. he a democratic congress,
1:28 am
senate, presidency. do people all of a sudden have a short term memory. >> are you really from georgia? >> born and raised. >> you sound like new jersey to me >> sean: i want to ask, we've been debating comments made jimmy hoffa referred to the tea party those sons of bitches we are going to be at war, take 'em out. maxine waters conservatives can go straight to hell. the real enemy in america is the tea party. another congressman andre carson they are racist they want to see african-americans hanging from trees. the president lectured the country on civility after tucson. but he says he's not going to be the speech police now. tonight would have been the opportunity to take on the extreme rhetoric of his party. do people think he's being hypocritical? >> i think we have a president who always doesn't do what he
1:29 am
says. we think he's going to do one thing he does the opposite. >> he was civil tonight. >> yes. he was civil tonight. however, he does not follow through. >> it is the first time he didn't blame bush, i was shocked. >> hypocritical and frankly serving his own political party. >> when you don't have an issue you can articulate well there seems to be this default to race. >> we are trusting a guy to create jobs who has never created a job. how does that work? >> i don't know he defaults to race. i think he's doing what he can. and i think congress -- if congress can come together then maybe things will be better. i'm not saying he's not at fault, somewhat. >> it goes back to he needs support. from day one i don't believe he has received 100% support. >> they couldn't even pass a budget. they had two years to pass a
1:30 am
budget. woo he had every bit of the two years. -- he had every bit of congress, political and consumer support. where is it going? what does he need? >> the tea party was not around two years ago. the tea party was a result of his policies and his spending without checks and balances. >> president obama has created more class warfare than any other president. >> you guys agree? >> yeah! >> you believe obama has been a cause of class warfare? >> yeah! >> 47% of people pay no taxes. >> take a look at the art around you what do you think? we are in atlanta this is the home of the artist. steve, come out this is the gentleman who pained this. [ applause ] -- -- sean, we've been using steve's art in all of these focus groups, i want to
1:31 am
commend you for this patriotism, democrats, republicans, founding fathers. this is what democracy is supposed to be about. this is what america is ed to be about. steve, thank you for the work that you have done. sean, back to you. >> sean: frank, tell everybody there, if they could please mail me up some varsity dogs and onion rings. i miss the varsity. >> by the way, andrew is nodding his head, yes. >> sean: i don't know if we can ship it. i'm craving it now as i think about it. frank you need to take them to the varsity for being such a great group. >> thank you guys. >> sean: he was in the audience of tonight's big job speech. rand paul is here with reaction. he will also grade his dad's let me tell you about a very important phone call i made. when i got my medicare card, i realized i needed an aarp...

1:34 am
1:35 am
not only should congress
1:36 am
not pass his plan. i say mr. president stop, your last plan hasn't worked and it is hurting the american economy. instead of temporary fixes, do what was worked in the past. permanent, pro-growth policies. >> sean: that was minnesota congresswoman michelle bachmann moments ago issuing a rebuttal to the president's job proposal earlier this evening. we are waiting a press conference by new york city mayor bloomberg. homeland security earlier today said there is a specific and credible threat, a terror threat, leading up to the 9/11 anniversary, having to do with potential car bombs in either new york city or washington, d.c.. when that press happens we will bring it to you live. >> joining me with reaction to her words to the president's speech and his father's performance in last night's debate, kentucky senator rand paul is back. by the way, were there any words examine chained between
1:37 am
your dad and -- exchanged between your dad and governor perry? >> what is funny about it, you see those pictures and they look so animated that were on the drudge report today. i didn't talk to my dad directly, but i heard through the staff they were having a friendly exchange. and he was coming up to greet him. it is funny, because they were at odds a little during the debate. apparently, the exchange was friendly and there weren't any words exchanged. >> sean: pictures -- put the headline in and caption. but the internet was abuzz with your dad's supporters. first, your reaction to the president's speech tonight? i tend to think you probably didn't hear anything that you agree4pkw with. anything you found new or enticing in any way that you could support? >> the way i look at it is the narrative that is built is we need to accept what he has
1:38 am
proposed. because already is proposing some great compromise that we love. the way i understand the process, he has a proposal now. i would think now we would have our jobs proposals and see where we agree. instead, you take it or leave it, this is the compromise. i'm not sure that is going to get us very far. the other thing i'm worried about is how is he going to pay for it? i think there's a little smoke and mirrors in this. we are going to periodically 300 billion but pay for it through cuts and increases over 10 years. they are not talking about cutting spending. they are talking about cutting proposed increases in spending. >> sean: besides being old, stale, under ing and all the things we talked about it took an -- an act of will to watch the entire thing. it is also 500 billion dollars in new spending. he's accumulated four trillion in debt the very number that he accused george bush of
1:39 am
being unpatriotic about when george bush accumulated that number in eight years, not 2 1/2 years. he says he has a way to pay for it but he's going to dump it on this special committee that we don't know if they can cut anything. >> this president is on course to accumulate more debt in his term than all 43 previous presidents combined. when he says it is paid for, i want to see the details the legislative writing. when they say they going to pay for it over 10 years, but spend it now, he has no control over future congresses. i'm concerned whether it will be paid for. >> sean: i want to show a clip this was newt gingrich. i thought it was profound what he had to say. i felt that this debate was trying to get your dad fighting with rick perry, perry fighting with romney. i thought newt gingrich nailed the media on this and nbc.
1:40 am
i don't believe they were interested in hearing ideas or going after the president's record. they didn't scrutinize barack obama this way in 2008. i want you to watch this piece by newt gingrich and get your reaction. >> since i still have a little time left, let me say. i hope all of my friends up here are going to repudiate every effort of the news media to get republicans to fight each other to protect barack obama who deserves to be defeated and all of us committed as a team whoever the nominee is, we are all for defeating barack obama. >> sean: that was a great moment. i'm not concerned about your efforts to get republicans fighting with each other. i thought about this, especially in light of the press that your dad was fighting with governor perry. >> newt hit it on the head twice last night and in iowa when he went after the media for asking silly questions. the other thing is any
1:41 am
republican, mr. generic republican, any republican on the stage are now beating president obama in a 1-1 poll. i think it shows the president is very weak. we are living in a failed presidency, failed economy. the question is whether there was anything of substance tonight that will be new or different. >> sean: what i got out of the debate is everyone one of them on that stage is infin ly better than what we got now. they -- all want to cut taxes, repeal obama care, except maybe your dad stronger national defense -- >> oh now sean, it is how you define national defense. it isn't always more military dollars moon a stronger defense. he does want to defend this country. >> sean: your dad and i economic issues are pretty much one % in sync. we have to run. >> our great, great american

we continue to ask the public to remain vigilant as we head into the weekend. and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement. thank you. >> jane thank you. now i would like to ask the police commissioner ray kelly to talk more about what we are doing in response to this threat. >> thank you mr. mayor. the police department had already taken a number of measures to protect the city in advance of the 10th anniversary of 9/11. however, in light of this new information, we are taking addition al precautions. we will be holding personnel, holding our tours for an additional four hours tomorrow and continuing at least through monday. effectively increasing by a third the size of our patrol transit and counter terrorism highway and traffic bureaus. we are also increasing the number of critical response
